Established in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level extension is the single TLD planned for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, just third-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to book john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired 3rd-level names remained functional.
